Clare Mayo
This fascinating book uncovers the story of the young men of Great Rissington who went off to fight in the trenches of the First World War. It provides a poignant account of a village at war, and is one that will resound through much of the country, highlighting the devastating effect the conflict had on the close-knit communities of Great Britain.
Meticulously researched biographical information, battalion war diaries, letters and photographs are brought together to vividly portray the personal stories of those that served, focusing not only on the men that gave their lives, but also on those who survived.
In a war primarily remembered for its mass casualties, ‘Til the Boys Come Home reminds us that the men who fought and died were individuals, brave men thrust into a conflict the likes of which the world had never seen. ‘Til the Boys Come Home is above all a human story, narrated against the backdrop of a global war.
About the author
Clare was born in Great Rissington and has family going back several generations in the area. She attended the village school followed by Westwood Grammar in Northleach. Her interest in the First World War was sparked by a photograph of her Grandfather in his uniform and the investigation of his records led to the idea behind this book; to write about all the menfolk from the village during the war.
