Andrew Hunt

This book is a companion volume to the author’s 2018 publication In the Forefront:  Alloa at War 1914-1919 and takes the same thematic approach. It breaks down the discussion of how a war has its impact on a town into sections, often relating to the different sub-groups that any small urban community has. In this way, following an introductory chapter on the reaction of Alloa’s citizens to the outbreak and early development of the war from September 1939, it then looks at the way that almost six years of war had its continuing and deepening impact on such areas as education, religion, daily life, sport, local politics, the effects on women and industry. This book is a social history, not a military history; but there is still a place found in the later chapters for further discussion on the local heroes and their wartime actions, the aftermath and how the war was memorialised.

About the author
Andrew Hunt was Principal Teacher of History at Alloa Academy from 1978 to 2010.  Over that time he taught the topic of ‘Life on the home front during the Second World War’ chiefly with S2 classes; but always held the view that teaching through the use of local examples of the impact of that war was the most effective way of capturing and keeping an interest.
